Downtown Hilo

We need to support the heart and history of our town: Downtown Hilo. First, we start with treating our homeless/houseless population with dignity by providing options to help them get off the streets. I worked at Central Fire Station for nearly 10 years and used to know many of the homeless on a first name basis. We can employ programs to support our Police and Fire/EMS workers to better serve our homeless population and assist them into a more productive and stable life under a roof.

We also need to embrace and implement the visionary County and private plans focused on ensuring Downtown Hilo is a safe place to walk, bike, shop, work and visit. As a stakeholder in the  Downtown Hilo Multimodal Plan, Hanau Hou Initiative and the Downtown Hilo Business Improvement District, we have some excellent plans that are ready to come off the shelf, out of the idea stage and implement them for a vibrant, fun and productive Downtown Hilo.  No one running has the track record I do: Let’s get it done together!

Downtown Hilo Multimodal Plan

The Downtown Hilo Multimodal Plan will transform Downtown into a safe and vibrant destination.  Through Hilo Bayfront Trails, I was fortunate to be involved in the collaboration and creation of the Downtown Hilo Multi Modal Masterplan. This plan is well thought out, uses principals that are well established and have been successful in many places. All 3 counties (Kauai, Maui and Honolulu) use similar plans and metrics that have made a big difference in the built environment and how it positively influences our daily lives.

Ever wonder why it’s so nice to sit in a park? Have your children play at a playground? It’s a well planned and built environment! And we can do the same for our Downtown, our streets and more!

Affordable housing

An affordable permitting and building process is critically needed right now. There are many legislative bills and Administrative Rules I will introduce to make this a reality for our local residents now, and into the future for our children. With my background in building, renovating and managing affordable rentals, I know where we can make a big difference. With your help, I intend to tackle the roadblocks and costs to build and renovate affordable housing for our current and future generations.

Working for the County of Hawaii for 25 years at many different fire stations made me keenly aware of the sizable maintenance backlog in County infrastructure. Whether it’s roads, parks or buildings, we need a plan to tackle the backlog of maintenance and a clear system that will transcend political cycles. I will develop legislation in consultation with our experienced workers and stakeholders to create an objective criteria and budgeting cycle to keep our county facilities in proper order. This will save money, create civic pride and boost morale in our county workforce.

Responsible Dog owner, Dog Park

I love animals, and I will commit to work tirelessly to open a designated responsible dog owner dog park in District 2 or Hilo town! I hope this pilot park will lead the way for more dog parks on Hawaii Island for people to get out, get healthy, meet others and enjoy the outdoors responsibly with their dog.
